GW Postdoc Appreciation Day and August Events
The GWPA continues to invite abstract submissions for a poster presentation at the GWPA Postdoc Appreciation Day on September 19th! We welcome you to a celebration of the great work of GW postdocs and a chance to advance your career.
There are also several other events in August. Details below:
1. GWPA POSTDOC APPRECIATION DAY
SEPTEMBER 19 | 10:30 AM - 4 PM | SEH BASEMENT (B1167 -- THE IVY WALL AREA AND ADJACENT CLASSROOMS)
You are invited to celebrate the great work of George Washington University Postdocs and advance your career at the GW Postdoc Association (GWPA) Postdoc Appreciation Day. GWPA will host a career panel with speakers that can advise you on both industry and academic careers. This will be followed by a workshop that will teach you how to perfect a short “elevator pitch” about your research. You can practice using this elevator pitch as the day finishes up with a round of poster presentations by GW postdocs. Lunch will be provided as well as snacks during the poster presentations.
We welcome submissions for poster presentations! Please submit the title, authors, and abstract when registering here. Registration is required.
The first five postdocs to register will have their poster costs covered by the GWPA. We will contact those five individuals to work out the details. Prizes will be awarded to the best posters: 1st = $300, 2nd = $200, 3rd = $100.
2. ICE CREAM SOCIAL

In the midst of the summer heat, we can probably all get behind having some ice cream. So clear your schedules at 1 PM on the Monday the 12th to have some ice cream with your fellow postdocs in the 1st floor common area of SEH. Please RSVP to gwpostdoc@gwu.edu so we can procure enough ice cream for everyone.
3. DATA CARPENTRY - GEOSPATIAL WORKSHOP
AUGUST 19 - 20 | 9 AM - 4:30 PM | NCLC @ GELMAN LIBRARY (2130 H ST., NW)
Have you wanted to learn to work with geospatial data in order to analyze spatial relationships and visualize data in a geographic context? Data Carpentry is presenting a 2-day workshop for graduate students, faculty, and other researchers on how to work with geospatial data. No prior experience is required. You will need a laptop with Windows, Linux, or Mac operating system (no Chromebooks) with administrator privileges to install new software. 1. GWNIC Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy Workshop
JUNE 10 - 14 | 9 AM - 5 PM | SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HALL
The George Washington University (GW) Nanofabrication and Imaging Center (GWNIC) presents a five-day correlative microscopy workshop, emphasizing biological samples. Some topics covered include state-of-the-art instrumentation, using complex modern microscopes with multiple modalities, 3D electron microscopy, and managing large numbers of images. 2. 2019 NCI and Frederick National Laboratory Technology Showcase
JUNE 12 | 12 PM - 5 PM | FNLCR Advanced Technology Research Facility, Frederick, MD
The 2019 Technology Showcase will again highlight technologies being developed at the NCI and Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) to encourage startup company formation, technology licensing and collaborations. The keynote speaker is Rich Bendis, President and CEO of BioHealth Innovation, Inc. and there were be panels on attracting investment in addition to the technology showcase. Registration is required. 4. Insights into the Technology Transfer Career

5. R-Based Reproducible Research Techniques for Synthesis

The research landscape is changing. Researchers are increasingly engaging in collaboration across networks; open science includes not just open publication but also open data, software, and workflows; and technology is evolving in support of this new paradigm. This five-day workshop is designed to help researchers stay abreast of current best practices and initiatives and get started on acquiring good data science skills to maximize their productivity, share their data with the scientific community effectively and efficiently, and benefit from the re-use of their data by others.
